Since late 2013, locals and visitors alike have wondered at the sight of Scottsdale’s Super Chunk Sweets & Treats candy store. It’s bright, almost neon hodgepodge of candy-striped walls and floors would be enough to capture anyone’s attention in Old Town Scottsdale, but its décor, of course, is not the shop’s main attractor. The smell of warm chocolate, waffle cones and other handcrafted sweets and treats is what brings people in — and it’s what keeps them coming back. I kid you not, people enter this store nose-first.

Hawaiian Rocky Road confections at Super Chunk
Super Chunk is the brainchild of Pastry Chef Country Velador and her husband, Sergio Velador. If her name sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because Country is also the Executive Pastry Chef at Cowboy Caio and Kazimierz World Wine Bar in Old Town Scottsdale.
Super Chunk’s candy creations range from the traditional to the wacky to the traditional-with-a-twist. What on Earth do I mean by traditional-with-a-twist? Well, for example, the shop has licorice. What candy store doesn’t? But instead of the normal, store-bought licorice varieties you’re used to seeing in a grocery store, Super Chunk’s licorice is make with fennel, anise, and green chartreuse.
They don’t joke around with their licorice.
Other favorites include mesquite chocolate chip cookies, hand pulled taffy, specialty caramel corn, brown butter brittles and duck fat toffee. If these weren’t enough, Super Chunk also has a unique ice cream selection and a cake and cheesecake bar.
Everything in the store is hand-crafted in-house and made with only the freshest, quality ingredients. Can’t make it to the store to experience the true deliciousness that is Super Chunk? Don’t worry, they deliver. All you have to do is make the call.
