Cosmetic surgery on the rise in Scottsdale
The Phoenix Business Journal (PBJ) recently spoke with local plastic surgeons to learn about industry trends. They learned that:
- Social media is driving more people to have cosmetic procedures
- Scottsdale is one of two major hubs in the west for cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery
Local cosmetic surgeons, Doctors Ali Mosharrafa, Bryan Gawley and Ron Caniglia all reported increases in the number of procedures they are doing. Most told PBJ, that in 2013, the services they performed returned to levels at or beyond what they were in 2007.
Influence of Social Media
Dr. Ron Caniglia cited one of the chief reasons for the upsurge in cosmetic procedures is the ever-increasing use of social media. Images on Facebook, Linked-in, Instagram and taking and sharing “selfies” are all about seeing and being seen.
The people behind the images are using social media for business-building, job-seeking and connecting with friends and family.
Typically people look at sites like Linked-in or Facebook before making a new acquaintance for personal or professional reasons. This includes men and women who are in top positions in a company or in the public view often.
Looking better in images helps make people feel better about themselves.
The American Academy of Facial and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) also believes that the increased use of social media has naturally led to an increase in cosmetic procedures.
An annual poll last year from AAFPRS surveyed 752 facial plastic surgeons across the country on trends in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. They reported a 31% increase in plastic surgery requests from people who wanted to look better on social media.
The AAFPRS survey also showed that the most popular procedures were facelifts and rhinoplasty (nose reconstruction).
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) said in a recent report that nearly 1.6 million Americans had cosmetic procedures and 13 million had less invasive procedures like Botox. Breast augmentation remained the most popular procedure. Upper-arm-lifts are also becoming increasingly popular.

Scottsdale as a destination for plastic surgery
People are traveling to have these procedures done to allow for recovery time. Patients are looking for great doctors to perform the procedures and great locations to recover at and they are finding both here in Scottsdale.
Scottsdale has always been a ‘hot-place’ for plastic surgery because of the caliber of our health care professionals. According to US News, there are 43 plastic surgeons in Scottsdale.
In addition, people seek out Scottsdale as a great place to recover because of the weather.
The internet is also helping to fuel the popularity of Scottsdale as a destination for cosmetic procedures, according to cosmetic surgeons and practitioners. People across the country and around the world are able to do their research online, and obtain information on the best cosmetic surgeons.
So with Scottsdale’s cosmetic surgery industry well-represented and respected here, and with Scottsdale’s popularity as a vacation spot for predictably good weather, activities galore, and top-notch resorts, tourism directly related to the cosmetic surgery industry is on the rise.
