Just like the golf courses in our area, the lawns of the DC Ranch community centers, common areas and parks will be overseeded during the last week of September. Residents are asked to keep off all common area grass from September 29 – October 24th to allow it to grow properly.
Overseeding is what we call the practice of “replacing” the summer grass with winter grass. The Bermuda grass, which is the grass that thrives here in the summer, is cut very short, and rye seed, a grass that tolerates colder weather, is laid over the Bermuda and allowed to grow in.
The short and browned Bermuda grass, plus lots of water, make a germination breeding ground for the new rye grass. Keeping off the grass is critical during this short time to give the new grass a chance to grow without disruption and make common areas green and lush during the winter.
With the colder weather, the Bermuda grass goes dormant over the winter. If Bermuda grass does not go through overseeding in the Fall, it will turn yellow once the overnight lows get cool enough and will remain that way until the overnight temperatures warm up again in the Spring.
