Sprucing up your home with a coat of interior paint is one of the easiest ways to add immediate value to your property. Whether you are getting ready to sell, or just want to repaint your home’s interior for your own enjoyment, you may want to think about choosing environmentally-friendly paint, which is safer for your family, safer for the environment, and better for resale.
Environmentally friendly paint doesn’t give off the toxic fumes for weeks on end like traditional paint does. Did you know that up to 50 percent of VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) are released years after a typical coat of paint dries? VOC’s are those nasty gases that may cause a variety of health problems.
To pick the safest paint options for your kids, pets and yourself, look for zero-VOC, water-based, non-toxic, non-flammable paints. You can also find paints that have low-biocides and natural pigments.
An added bonus when you go to sell, it’s a great selling point for prospective buyers to know their future home was painted with zero-VOC paint.
It used to be that you could buy environmentally-friendly interior paints in ONLY a handful of color options. Today, “green” paint (figuratively, not literally) is available in hundreds of colors.
Primers, which have traditionally also been a source of VOC toxicity, are now also available non-VOC.
Keep your eye on the labels: “low-VOC” is not the same as “non-VOC.” If you aren’t sure, ask for a material safety data sheet (MSDS).
Here are a few other green tips when it comes to paint:
- Buy only the amount of paint you will use
- Recycle the steel cans
- Store the can upside down to create a tight seal around the lid
- Donate excess paint to a local theater or community group
- Take unused paint to a local hazardous waste collection program
Choosing a zero-VOC alternative is not only healthy for your family, but healthy for the environment, too, and better for resale.
