DC Ranch Food Circle community service program

The DC Ranch Food Circle is a great community service program developed by Karen Ginsberg, a DC Ranch resident. It was developed to help those in need by donating any extra food in the fridge.

If you are moving or leaving on vacation for the summer, get rid of excess supplies by giving to DC Ranch Food Circle. Karen Ginsburg had the idea to start her own community service program in 2011 after visiting her parents’ gated community in Florida.

“At their clubhouse, there was a big box. When people leave for the season, they drop off food that they don’t want,” Ginsburg explained. “I had actually been looking for an idea of how I could myself give back.”

Ginsburg collects food from the DC Ranch Community Center every Friday, and she is also available to pick up items directly from residents’ homes. She then donates all the food she collects to the Foothills Food Bank. Ginsburg helped a similar program get started in the neighborhood of Grayhawk.

Last year alone, she donated 800 pounds of food, and this year she has already collected 450 pounds of food so far. She has collected 5,600 pounds of food and household items since beginning the program two years ago. The food bank benefits tremendously from the donations.

“Needless to say, they’re really happy, because these are people that really need the help,” Ginsburg said. “For most of us, they’re either going to throw it away or going to give it to whoever will take it, but I’m giving it to people who really need it.”

All different types of donations are accepted including paper goods, non-perishable items, frozen products, baby items and toothpaste. Ginsburg said expired items or already-open products are the exception.  DC Ranch also donates extra items left over from their community events. Snowbirds, people leaving for the summer or even new residents to the neighborhood can help.

“What you would have to pay to ship a jar of tomato sauce is the same as if you were to buy a new one when you got where you were going,” Ginsburg said. “It certainly makes more sense to donate to someone who can use it.”
