Last week, Scottsdale City Council said yes to the plans to create and build the Desert Discovery Center at the Gateway to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, next door to the community of DC Ranch in North Scottsdale. It had been anticipated that the Council would give the go ahead on the Center, but no one knew which location would be selected.
The Desert Discovery Center will be a museum and educational venue to bring the story of the upper Sonoran Desert to the community and Scottsdale’s thousands of annual visitors.
A $74 million dollar project from public funds — Scottsdale voters approved a sales tax in both 1995 and 2004 to purchase future preserve lands — is a huge chunk of change for a project in its conceptual stages to say yes to, but Scottsdale always does it big with their point of pride projects. Where the money will come from is anybody’s guess, and they are in the process of brain-storming for ideas. Have any innovative ideas to help fund the project? Let The Matheson Team know and they will send them on to the planning committee, or show up at the next work session discussion held by the Scottsdale City Council.
What has already been figured out is the Center will add to the local tourism and bring value-added to the surrounding communities. And one thing we know, the community of DC Ranch is very lucky to have it in their own backyard!
