Clearing away clutter is something many of us do when we’re getting ready for a special event at our homes, preparing our home for selling, remodeling, or when we’re just in the mood for some spring cleaning. To help you get rid of old electronics gadgets including old phones, computers, printers and tablets, here are two free recycling alternatives near DC Ranch.
(Don’t throw your old electronics equipment in the garbage! According to the Environmental Protection Agency, plastics and other components found in computers made up more than 20% of the 164 million tons of garbage sent to landfills in 2012. Let’s do our part to reduce landfill waste.)
1. Best-Buy
15449 N. Hayden Road
(Near Frank Lloyd Wright and Loop 101)
- Accepts 3 items per household per day free of cost to Scottsdale residents any day of the week: ink and toner cartridges, rechargeable batteries, wires, cords and cables, computers, chargers, speakers, cameras, broad band, headsets, CD’s, Blue-Rays, e-readers, video games and gadgets, monitoring systems, hair dryers, vacuums, fans, heart rate monitors and more at their Customer Service Desk
- For larger electronics and appliances (TV’s bigger than 60″, console TV’s, refrigerators, other large appliances) the store will remove your old goods free of charge when you purchase a new one at Best-Buy. If you’re not purchasing a new item, Best-Buy charges between $20-50 to pick-up and dispose of your unwanted items.
- Best-Buy donates working products to local charities in need
- Products that can’t be fixed, resold or donated are disassembled and recycled
In 2009, Best-Buy set a goal to recycle 1 billion pounds of electronics products by the end of 2014. Best-Buy exceeded that goal this summer, hitting and now surpassing the 1 billion pound recycle mark.
2. City of Scottsdale
9191 E San Salvador Drive
(Near 90th St and Loop 101)
- Frequent events for Scottsdale residents:
- Old computers, printers, keyboards, scanners, mice, screens, circuit boards and hard drives
- Telephones cell phones, answering machines, pagers, typewriters and calculators
- Cameras, TV’s, VHS’ and DVR’s, DVD’s and stereo equipment
- Next date: Saturday, December 6 from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm
- Bring a picture ID or city utility bill for proof of residence
With smart phones, iPads, lap-tops, printers and peripherals continuously evolving and the pace of consumers upgrading to the latest and greatest, the old unused products are a risk to the environment, especially when not disposed of properly.
Donating these items for reuse and recycling prevents them from getting to landfills. This means less waste and a potential gift of a usable product for an organization in need.
