Scottsdale area rainfall breaks 75-year record yesterday with nearly 3.3 inches of rain

When I woke up yesterday morning, it was not very clear to me that the Phoenix area was going to break a rainfall record set 75 years ago on September 4, 1939.   But, once I had my first sip of coffee, two things dawned on me:  it was much darker than usual and it was raining, hard.

Thankfully, due to our well built drainage systems throughout the DC Ranch community, our neighborhoods and roads remained safe.

By 8:30 yesterday morning, at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport it was reported that 2.96″ of rain had fallen in 6 hours, and by 5:00 p.m. that number increased to 3.3″.  This is 41% of our average annual rainfall in less than 14 hours!

Over 6″ of rain fell in Chandler, and over 4″ fell in Glendale, Mesa and Paradise Valley.

The roads were slick.  The west and south sides of Phoenix had severe traffic problems and flooding causing a rush-hour that will be remembered for a long time.

It became a ‘snow’ day for our local schools as many were closed.  The governor asked non-essential state employees to stay home.  Here in DC Ranch, the Men’s Senior Match Play Championship was cancelled at The Country Club.

Hats-off to the various municipal fire and police departments who managed 1,300 and 3,500 emergency calls respectively yesterday relating to the flood.  There were 15 water rescues and thankfully no serious injuries.

There is a small possibility of rainfall in the forecast for the next two days, all remnants of Hurricane Norbert that dissolved in Mexico when it hit land.  There still is a need for caution when you’re driving about town, so please be careful.
