Whether you’re ready to renovate your DC Ranch home because you’ve logged more hours in it than you expected to during 2020 or you’re preparing to sell your house in 2021, check out these three hardwood flooring trends to pay attention to for 2021.
3 Hardwood Flooring Trends for Your DC Ranch Home in 2021
Hardwood floors are an important component of your home – but if you’re like many people, you don’t give them much thought unless you don’t like them. If you’re considering pulling up your existing flooring, refinishing what you have or starting from scratch, these are the most popular hardwood flooring trends for 2021:
- Longer boards are a great way to make your space look bigger
- Select-grade floors are the way to go
- Neutral colors are in
Here’s a closer look at each.

2021 Hardwood Floor Trend #1: Use Long Boards
Longer boards make a space look larger because there are fewer seams to interrupt visual patterns. If you have a small kitchen, for example, you’ll definitely want that continuity.
A lot of homes use a mix of short, medium and long planks, but that’s falling out of favor with professional designers – and more importantly, with buyers. People want to see a nice, streamlined floor, which gives a sense of harmony and balance in any space.

2021 Hardwood Floor Trend #2: Pick Select-Grade Woods
Hardwoods used in flooring are graded, just like your marble countertops and other home features are. Grading refers to the way the boards look, and they’re measured according to “character” markings. Character markings refer to natural characteristics, like:
- Variation in color
- Knots
- Worm holes
- Average board length
- Milling imperfections
- Irregularities
Grading is only a way to quantify a wood’s appearance – you can get high-quality woods in any grade. The most commonly used grades are select, #1 Common and #2 Common. Select-grade is definitely in for 2021; those are the hardwood floor boards that have a more uniform appearance and feature fewer imperfections and character markings than their “common” counterparts have.
2021 Hardwood Floor Trend #3: Stick to Neutral Colors
Lighter, more neutral colors are in for 2021 – people are saying goodbye to rich mahogany and other dark colors, which make spaces feel more closed-in and smaller. Light tones in oak and walnut are now cornerstones in the most modern spaces.
To take things a step farther, consider using woods stained with organic products. Some builders and flooring experts are working with products like black tea and pomegranate juice to stain oak floors, and the results can be spectacular.

Should You Re-Floor Your Home Just to Sell It?
If you’re thinking about selling your home in 2021, don’t rip up the floors just yet – you may not need to. You should talk to your DC Ranch REALTOR® before you make any major changes. If your floors are extremely dated, your agent might suggest that you have a professional make a few upgrades. However, that’s not always necessary. Many buyers are purchasing homes as-is and asking for flooring allowances so they can choose their own styles.
