Missed the Tour de France this year? Don’t despair, because the Tour de Scottsdale is happening this weekend in your very own backyard. On Sunday Oct. 13, participate in the 10th annual event as a rider or spectator. It starts on Market Street at DC Ranch and ends with a big party in the same place. The event is hosted by the DC Ranch Community Council and benefits McDowell Sonoran Conservancy that helps protect the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
Pick either the 30 mile or 70 mile ride. Any type of bike is allowed as long as you can ride it safely in a big group. Mountain bikes, recumbents and handbikes are all acceptable However, the Tour de Scottsdale website asks that riders not use aero-type and other similar auxiliary handlebars including tri-bikes with otherwise unremovable aerobars. Only bikes equipped with drop bars or flat bars will be allowed to ride in the event. Check out the Athlete Guide for a schedule of events, maps and general information for participants. There is also a handy FAQ s section on the Tour de Scottsdale website if you are confused about bike requirements and more.
There are only spaces for 2,000 cyclists, so register as soon as possible to guarantee your spot. You must sign up before Friday Oct. 11 at midnight! Pick up your sign up packet from the DC Ranch Homestead Community Center Friday before 5 p.m. or at the race on Sunday at the start/finish line starting at 5 a.m. You will also receive a goody bag from Virtual Race Bags for participating sent to your email.
You don’t have to ride to be involved. The Tour de Scottsdale will be just as fun for spectators. Track your favorite athletes as they ride past. Friends and family of participants can sign up for free Facebook and cell phone alerts. In addition, Market Street Kitchen on Market Street in DC Ranch is hosting a pre-tour dinner on Saturday Oct. 12 just before the big race kicks off. It’s a special three course meal available for participants, family and friends. It’s only offered for one night only, so check out the special menu or call the restaurant at (480) 278-7044.
