A simple addition of a wood pergola to your back or side yard can add an element of privacy and shade to your outdoor living spaces. The pergola is an architectural design element originating from the Italian Renaissance that has become quite popular in the Southwest. With the trending Tuscan and Old World style architecture appearing on the scene in the last decade in Arizona, this garden adornment has become a popular addition to many backyards.
The most common design of the pergola is the detached pergola with concrete or stone-pavered flooring in a traditional courtyard setting. The placement of a free-standing pergola can be in the middle of the yard with just patio furniture accents or built closer to the home where the space can be integrated into an outdoor dining area.
It’s common to find a fire pit under a pergola in many backyards but never vie for this option with a pergola that is attached to the home.
Other than aesthetic purposes, the pergola has functional value as well! The slatted semi-open roof adds shade and allows for the circulation of air. In some homes it serves the dual function of a trellis with lattice work for climbing vines. The typical top is stained slatted beams, but bamboo tops and Italian terra cotta trim can be found in some of the more luxurious Mediterranean-themed compounds and estates.
Another common application for the structure is a covering for pools or a bridge between outdoor living spaces and courtyards. It’s also serves as an area for less hardy landscape and potted plants. Grass accents between concrete pavers can be the green that’s needed in the Southwest backyard and a strategically placed pergola provides the required protection for a healthy lawn.
While a DIY free-standing pergola is an easy week-end garden project, a more complex attached feature or unique southwestern look with corbels, vertical carved posts and support crossbeams will require the professionals.
