Scottsdale launches 2-year homeowner rebate program to reduce salt in reclaimed water

In July, the City of Scottsdale launched a homeowner rebate and 2-year pilot program with a goal of reducing salt in waste water.  The program is open to all Scottsdale homeowners through an application process.

Scottsdale is an environmentally conscious and action-oriented city, which is another reason why Scottsdale communities such as DC Ranch are a great place to call home.

How a water softener works

How a water softener works

Where does the salt come from?
Many Scottsdale residents have water softeners to reduce the hardness of their water. Water softeners use salt (sodium or potassium chloride) to soften the water but the water softeners discharge salt into the city’s sewer network every time they regenerate.

Self-regenerating, salt-using water softeners are the biggest contributors of added salt in Scottsdale’s waste water.  The city water department estimates that these water softeners are responsible for more than 30% of the salt in our waste water.

Why does Scottsdale want to remove salt from waste water?
The waste water in Scottsdale is reclaimed and used for irrigation and ground water recharge. Reusing water with higher salt content directly impacts the environment.

What can homeowners do?
There are a 3 things you can do to reduce salt emission if you have a water softener.  1) You can change from a self-regenerating softener to one that generates on-demand.  2) you can change from a self-generating softener and subscribe to a portable exchange service.  3) You can remove the water softener completely.

What is the rebate?
There are 3 different programs for approved applicants:

  • One-time $50 rebate for replacing an existing self-regenerating salt using softener with a demand-based softener
  • One-time $100 rebate for removing a self-regenerating softener and subscribing to a portable exchange service
  • One-time $250 rebate for homeowners who completely remove their self-regenerating water softener
