Had your fill of baseball games and shopping? Why not head west young man, to experience the true flavor of the Old West and the workings of a real-life Western town. Wickenburg is only 75 miles northwest of DC Ranch and there are some real nice town folk there just waiting to make your acquaintance.
After a scenic 60 minute drive, you can stretch your legs by either stopping before you enter town at the lush streamside oasis of the Hassayampa River Preserve or continue on to downtown Wickenburg and start the Walking Tour of Wickenburg.
If you take the walking tour, you’ll start at the town’s official Visitor Center, The Santa Fe Depot, that dates back to 1895 and was acquired and restored in 1987.
Not to be missed is one of Arizona’s finest museums, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum that houses an outstanding collection of Western and American Indian art and artifacts. If travelling between March 20th and May 5th, check out the 10th annual Cowgirl Up! which features dozens of women artists exhibiting their Western artwork.
You’ll need the entire day to take in the highlights of the town and more time if you really want to dig deep and meet the Arizona pioneers, miners and ranchers that made up the true character of the West.
Definitely go hungry so you can experience breakfast, lunch and dinner with something on the menu for just about everyone’s taste buds. Enjoy some authentic Mexican cuisine or Mexican fast food, fine dining, American home-style cooking, pubs, bars and grills and even some homemade ice cream at the café and ice cream store downtown.
You’ll likely come away with a friend or two, and that my friend, is what the West is all about.
