The DC Ranch Homeowner’s Association recently announced that Century Link has begun the installation of fiber optic cables in DC Ranch’s Country Club Village. The community chose Century Link as the supplier for this project because their conduit is already in the ground in many DC Ranch neighborhoods.
Century Link is beginning this project in the Country Club section of the community because this is the only section that is fully serviced by Century Link conduit already. After installation in The Country Club is complete, installation will begin in the 3 other villages of DC Ranch (Silverleaf, Desert Camp and Desert Parks). Dates of installation have not been finalized.
What is fiber optic cabling?
Fiber optic cabling transmits data faster over longer distances without interruption. The cabling is smaller than DSL or standard cabling, weighs less and does not generate electricity.
These factors make fiber optic cables easier to install and interference nearly non-existent. Unlike other cabling alternatives, fiber optics don’t interact with electricity which means they can directly come into contact with electrical equipment, powerlines and even lightning and perform without disruption.
Fiber optics are non-corrosive and they cost less to maintain. Consequently, service is less expensive than traditional cable and nearly the same cost as DSL, but considerably faster.
What’s the plan and timing for DC Ranch?
According to Andy Andrews, the Executive Director of the DC Ranch Association, fiber optic cables are currently being pulled through the “dog-houses” (cable boxes) in the north end of the Country Club Village at DC Ranch. He’s not sure when service will be available but anticipates it will be complete in the next two months.
After that, work will begin on the other neighborhoods.
Mr. Andrews also commented, “Current Century Link customers will be the first to be offered the service, as residents with other cable services like Cox and DirectTV do not have Century Link cables running to their homes yet”. Once the main cables are installed, customers in the community with Century Link service will have faster, uninterrupted access for internet, phone and television.
Prism™ TV from Century Link is a way to wirelessly watch Television on any device. It will also be available in the near future.
Do you need Century Link Fiber Optics?
The answer to that question is, “it depends.” If you don’t watch much television, nor use the phone or internet very often, DSL may be your most cost effective option.
Traditional cable is a tried and true alternative, though a bit more expensive and less flexible than DSL or fiber optics.
Fiber optics are the best option for customers who want data and information (television, internet and telephone) at the fastest possible speeds. The wireless TV capability offered through Century Link’s Prism service gives subscribers the ability to watch television from any wireless device as well as record programs from any where.
Fiber optic cabling is becoming more common, but still is a rarity in most markets. DC Ranch is fortunate to be one of the first communities in the Scottsdale area to have installation underway and service available in the very near future.
