Like a lot of Valley hockey fans, I’m looking forward to the start of the 2014-15 Coyotes hockey season on October 9th. This year, our local team has a new name. The Phoenix Coyotes are now the Arizona Coyotes.
Jerseys have changed as well, including a new logo to incorporate the new name. (Hang-on to those old ones – they may be collectors’ items one day.)
Phoenix Coyotes now the Arizona Coyotes
You may know that I’m Canadian born and raised, so you might say, the love of hockey is in my blood. As devoted fans, members of The Matheson Team love going to the Coyotes’ home games.
Did you know that many of the Coyotes players live in DC Ranch? This is not surprising – the community’s close proximity to the 101 Freeway makes it convenient to get over to Glendale for the games at Jobing.com Arena. In addition, the Coyotes practise at the Ice Den, just a few miles from DC Ranch.
New rule changes this year
This new season marks the 97th year of play for the NHL and the game continues to evolve. There are a few new rule changes this year:
- The Trapezoidal area behind the net will be 4 feet wider
- Hash marks outside face-off circles grow to 5′ from 3.5′
- In OT, teams will change ends and ice will be resurfaced (to improve play and decrease shoot-outs)
- Coaches will be free to pick shoot-out participants 0n-the-go
- Icing – if player attempts to get kicked out of face-off to buy time he’ll get 2 minute penalty
- NHL’s expanded use of video replay reviews for better ‘calls’
- More stringent fines for players and coaches with repeat offenses

Pre-season starts the week of September 21st. In fact, our Coyotes have 4 pre-season games that week.
9/22 – Arizona at LA
9/23 – Arizona at Anaheim
9/24 – Calgary at Arizona
9/26 – San Jose at Arizona
Regular Season Schedule
The regular season starts October 9th and ends April 11th, 2015. Arizona’s first 4 games of the regular season are right here at home.
Game 1: 10/9 – Winnipeg at Arizona
Game 2: 10/11 – LA at Arizona
Game 3: 10/15 – Edmonton at Arizona
Game 4: 10/18 – St. Louis at Arizona
