If you’re selling a home in DC ranch, you’re a real estate agent will most likely talk to you about the importance of staging. And because many of our clients choose to stage their own homes, we’ve decided to share a few staging secrets the pros use.
5 Secrets Most Home Stagers Use (but Won’t Tell You)
Check out the five home staging secrets that expert home stagers used to help their clients sell their homes faster and for more money:
- They create conversational areas
- They favor floor space unbroken by rugs
- They use mirrors to create the illusion of space
- They leave out unnecessary furniture
- They open the window dressings
Here’s a closer look at each.
Secret #1 Most Stagers Use: They Create Conversational Areas
Professional home stagers know that even buyers who aren’t big on entertaining like to see that homes are perfect for it, so they create conversational areas within rooms. For example, a good stager will arrange seating in the living room in a conversational group, even if that’s not how you ordinarily use the space. Doing so makes rooms appear larger. And if you have an extra-long room, think about creating two separate conversational spaces and grouping them by using area rugs (but see Secret #2 for more on that).

Secret #2 Most Stagers Use: They Favor Floor Space Unbroken By Rugs
unbroken floor space makes a room appear larger, which is why many home stagers choose not to go overboard with rug placement. In fact, though it’s okay to use a rug here or there to pull together decorative elements and furniture, it’s best to avoid rugs wherever possible. Even if you live with rugs every day and feel they truly complement your space, they can make the floor appear smaller, which then makes the room feel smaller.
Secret #3 Most Stagers Use: They Use Mirrors to Create the Illusion of Space
A well placed mirror can make a room appear much larger than it is. Home stagers know this, so they put mirrors across from windows with great views and adjacent to light sources. The main idea with a mirror is to reflect light, which makes spaces seem bigger. And there may be an added benefit, also: A buyer who sees themselves in a mirror in your home may have an easier time envisioning themselves living there.

Secret #4 Most Stagers Use: They Leave Out Unnecessary Furniture
Buyers like to see spacious homes, so professional home stagers remove furniture it makes a space appear smaller. For example, many professionals remove dressers and bedside tables from bedrooms; That’s because these types of furniture, though necessary, only serve to make a space feel more crowded. if you have to turn sideways to get past a piece of furniture, it doesn’t belong in your home while you’re trying to sell.
Secret #5 Most Stagers Use: They Open the Window Dressings
Natural light is the key to selling a home quickly and at the best possible profit. That’s why home stagers will pull up the blinds all the way and tie back the drapes. You should do the same each time a prospective buyer comes to tour your home.
