If you’re like many people, you already know that having live plants in your home can make it feel more warm and welcoming – but there are five plants in particular that will both purify your indoor air and give prospective buyers a good feeling about your house. This guide explains five must-have air-purifying plants you need in your home when it’s for sale.
5 Air-Purifying Plants You Need in Your Home When It’s for Sale
Plants make you more productive, clear out toxins from the air and create a “homey” feeling in nearly any space – and that’s all backed by science. Having plenty of fresh greenery can even help you sell your home. So which plants should you keep in your home while it’s for sale? Experts suggest these five:
- Barberton daisy
- Snake plant
- Broad lady palm
- Flamingo lily
- Scarlet Star bromeliad
Here’s a closer look at each.
Barberton Daisy
The Barberton Daisy is a beautifully cheerful plant that comes with blossoms in orange, pink, red or yellow. Like many other indoor houseplants on this list, it filters out formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene, which are found in a lot of home-related items (like paints and synthetic fibers, such as upholstery). These plants only need plenty of indirect natural light, and you should keep the soil moist but well-drained for them to thrive.

Snake Plant
Long-known for its air-cleansing abilities, snake plant (also called mother-in-law’s tongue) is a powerhouse that releases oxygen at night. It’s also one of the best plants known to science for filtering out formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, toluene and xylene – all dangerous chemicals common in homes. The biggest thing to remember with snake plant is not to over-water it; its roots can rot easily if the soil is too moist.
Broad Lady Palm
The Broad Lady Palm reduces airborne ammonia that comes from common cleaning products. Commonly known as rhapis excelsa, this plant needs indirect sunlight and doesn’t need a lot of humidity to do well. You do have to provide it with well-drained potting soil, though, and water it regularly (but in the winter, you can slow down a bit). It tolerates cool air well, too.
Flamingo Lily
Flamingo lilies are perfect for adding a splash of color. With heart-shaped red leaves, they’re excellent at sucking dangerous chemicals from the air – and their beautiful leaves are as attractive as they are effective. Flamingo lilies thrive in bright indoor environments (but away from direct sunlight). They need to be watered about twice a week, and they do very well in humid environments.

Scarlet Star Bromeliad
The Scarlet Star bromeliad is a tough and gorgeous houseplant. It can pull volatile organic chemicals out of the air while thriving in a humid environment (like the bathroom). These plants need plenty of water, but don’t let their soil get too soggy; put it in a place where it’ll get moderate to bright light, but not direct sun for the best results.
Pro tip: Watering a bromeliad is a little different from watering other types of plants. The center of the plant is called its tank (or cup, depending on who you talk to). Fill the tank in the center, and never let it go completely dry. You’ll have to flush it out periodically (around once a week) because the water can go stagnant.
