3 Tips for Dealing With Dog Anxiety After Moving to DC Ranch

If you’re a pet parent, you know that your dog will likely become stressed before, during and after your move to DC Ranch – but how can you deal with dog anxiety once you’re in your new home? This guide explains.

3 Tips for Dealing With Dog Anxiety After Moving to DC Ranch

Whether you’re moving long-distance with your dog or you’re simply moving across town to live in DC Ranch, you know that your pooch is likely dealing with at least a little anxiety. Even the most laid-back dogs can experience a bit of stress when routines change, the scenery changes and you’re obviously (at least to a dog) anxious. However, experts suggest that the following tips can help you minimize your dog’s anxiety and smooth out the process:

  1. Help your dog burn off energy
  2. Go back to your pre-move routine as soon as you can
  3. Give your dog plenty of extra attention

Here’s a closer look at each.

Tip #1 for Dealing With Dog Anxiety After Moving: Help Your Dog Burn Off Energy

First things first: Activity and mental stimulation help dogs shed stress (just like they do for humans). Make time to go to the park, play fetch in the backyard or play puzzle games to help your four-legged family member get back on an even keel. You can play “find it” around the house – a game in which you hide small treats in out-of-sight places, requiring your dog to use her sniffer to find them, or you can invest in some puzzle toys that require your dog to manipulate an object to get it to release treats.

Tip #2 for Dealing With Dog Anxiety After Moving: Go Back to Your Pre-Move Routine

Dogs – again, much like humans (especially young ones) – thrive on routine. Try to get back to your pre-move routine as soon as you can after your move. That goes for feeding times, play time, walks and cuddles. Your dog will know what to expect (and when to expect it), so he’ll be able to count on what’s coming next. That’s particularly helpful in a new home, where the scenery has changed.

Tip #3 for Dealing With Dog Anxiety After Moving: Give Your Dog Plenty of Extra Attention

When your dog sees you, endorphins rush and she feels better about everything – and when you pet her, the flood gets bigger. The more time you can spend with your dog after your move, the better, even if you’re just collapsing on the sofa exhausted after a day of unpacking. Make time for all her favorite things, whether that means extra belly rubs or some extra-special treats from the kitchen.
