5 Places to Keep Cool Near DC Ranch This Summer
These are our favorite “hotspots” to keep cool in Scottsdale’s summer heat:
- Paiute Park
- McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic and Fitness Center
- Roosevelt Lake
- Big Surf
- Salt River
Here’s a closer look at each.
Paiute Park
Paiute Park
3210 North 66th Street
480-312-7275
Paiute Park spans 8 acres of natural beauty, and it also has a splash pad that runs continuously throughout the day. It also has picnic areas, ramadas, a pair of tennis courts, a basketball court and a playground, which means it’s a great place to spend the day.
McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic and Fitness Center
McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic and Fitness Center
15525 North Thompson Peak Parkway
480-312-6677
The public aquatics at McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic and Fitness Center are nothing short of impressive. There’s an 8-lane, 25-yard lap pool, two 1-meter diving boards and two 3-meter diving boards… but even better, there’s a large tube water slide, a lazy river and a zero-depth entry play pool for kids. You’ll also find several water play features and a spray pad, plus grassy areas that are perfect for sprawling out on a picnic blanket.
Roosevelt Lake
Roosevelt Lake
28085 AZ-188
602-977-7170 (Marina)
Roosevelt Lake is a boating paradise. You can kayak, motorboat, putt along on a pontoon – it’s up to you. This lake is actually a reservoir formed by the Theodore Roosevelt Dam on the Salt River, and you can even fish in it (it’s stocked with largemouth bass, flathead catfish, bluegill, channel catfish and smallmouth bass). There are also a handful of camping areas, and it’s right across the street from the Tonto National Monument.
Big Surf
Big Surf
1500 North McClintock Drive in Tempe
480-994-2297
Big Surf, located in Tempe, was the location of the first wave pool in the U.S. – and it’s still going strong today. You can buy day passes or season passes to the water park, which includes the Waikiki Beach Wave Pool, Hurricane Slides, The Black Hole (a dark, enclosed water slide), Tornado Twisters, the White Serpentine Slide, Kilauea Cove Slides, Tahitian Twisters and the Cyclone & Tsunami Slides. Looking for something more kid-friendly? Bora Bora Bay, the Otter Slides and Captain Cook’s Landing are great for the under-48-inches-tall set.
Salt River
The Salt River runs right through Scottsdale (it’s along the border of Scottsdale and Tempe, as well as our border with Mesa). You can kayak, canoe, paddleboard or play in the water there – but be warned: You have to start at the top and let the current carry you back down. Even for experienced boaters, there’s almost no way to get back up the river. The rapids are small and tame, but the current is strong. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a glimpse of the Salt River wild horses – and if you’re up for it, you can head to Lost Dutchman State Park for a picnic.
