3 Can’t-Miss Spring Hikes Near DC Ranch

- Pinnacle Peak Park’s Summit Trail
- Tom’s Thumb Trail
Here’s a closer look at each hike so you know what to expect.
#1. McDowell Sonoran Preserve’s Gateway Loop Trail
The Gateway Loop Trail in McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a peaceful, quiet hike. It’s 4.5 miles all the way around, and it only gains 655 feet in elevation – so really, it’s a stroll through the desert that drops you right back off where you started.
It’s considered a moderate hike, primarily because there isn’t a lot of shade and because of its length. The terrain isn’t always smooth, either – it’s a bit rocky in some spots – so wear good hiking shoes. Bring plenty of water, as it’s a long trek. There are a few stops along the way where you can catch your breath and enjoy the views, and there are restrooms and water fountains at the trailhead.
Dogs are permitted on the Gateway Loop Trail, but they must be on a leash at all times.

#2. Pinnacle Peak Park’s Summit Trail
The Summit Trail in Pinnacle Peak Park is a popular out-and-back hike. It’s a moderately difficult hike that will take you a total of 3.8 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 1,003 feet. When you arrive at the trail, you’ll see Pinnacle Peak – but it’s not really a peak hike. The trail simply gets you closer to the peak, so don’t be disappointed when it ends. (If you’re a rock climber, there’s an access trail – but be warned that you can’t put up your own fixed anchors. You must use those that are in place, and the park staff doesn’t maintain them. Technically, you’re not supposed to climb the rocks.)
There are a few rest stops along the way, all with spectacular views. You’ll see the whole valley and McDowell Mountain from about a half-mile in.
Dogs aren’t allowed on the Summit Trail.

#3. Tom’s Thumb Trail
When you’re ready for a good challenge, Tom’s Thumb Trail is there to provide it. This 4-mile, out-and-back trail is a gorgeous trip that sees an elevation gain of 1,236 feet.
You’ll enjoy great views of the southern McDowell Mountains and the sprawl of Phoenix along the way. The trail, which is managed by the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, does not have any water – not even at the trailhead – so bring plenty along with you.
Dogs are permitted on Tom’s Thumb Trail, but they must be on a leash at all times.
