December 6: History of the Stoneman Road Hike
Historian Len Marcisz will lead an interpretive hike covering the origins of Stoneman Road – including the road’s use in military campaigns against the Yavapai in the 1870s.
December 23: Walk and Learn: Self-Guided Tour of the Sonoran Desert on the North Trail
The most popular hiking trail in the McDowell Mountain Regional Park, the North Trail is a 3-mile loop that’s considered “easy” by most standards. Interpretive pamphlets will be available about 0.1 mile in.
Events for Kids at McDowell Mountain Regional Park
December 16: Reptile Feeding
Kids can come see how cold-blooded reptiles eat (and watch it all happen) in the McDowell Mountain Regional Park Visitor Center between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. (Just FYI, frozen rodents are on the menu.)
December 28: Extreme Homes – Sonoran Desert Version
Designed for all ages, this program at the park’s Visitor Center takes place between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. Guests explore all kinds of desert animal habitats to learn what snakes, scorpions and other creatures call “home.”
Fitness Events at McDowell Mountain Regional Park
December 15: Friday Fitness Hike – Dixie Mine
Between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on December 15, explore the Dixie Mine Trail at the end of Golden Eagle Boulevard. Some hiking experience is recommended – it’s between 8 and 12 miles long, depending on how far you go. Wear comfortable shoes!
December 17: Mountain Bike Fun Group Ride
“No riders left behind” is the motto for this beginning mountain biker-friendly event, which starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 12 p.m. Riders will break up into groups going on different trails, so distances and difficulties will vary. You must have a helmet (and a bike) to participate.
