Spring activities are in full swing at DC Ranch’s Desert Camp Community Center and this year the annual spring event is Eggstravaganza: By the Sea! Yep, head to the beach and boardwalk where the fun centers around a sand castle and beach themed games. There’ll even be a mermaid on board for family pictures!
The highlight is the egg hunt but you must remember to bring your own basket to collect your goodies. You’ll need to be on your toes to not miss your turn since the timetable is strictly adhered to. It’s broken down into 15 minute hunt increments based on your child’s age.
Here’s the egg hunt timetable that makes for a level playing field for everyone:
9:30 am Ages 1 and 2
10:00 am Age 3
10:30 am Ages 4 and 5
11:00 am Ages 6 and 7
11:30 am Ages 8 and 9
Why is there a bunny and why do we hide eggs at this time of year? History has it that the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, Eostre took a hare as her companion; hence rabbits became a symbol of spring and fertility. The decoration of eggs, a symbol of new life, dates back to before the 13th century and the Easter Bunny didn’t arrive on the scene until the 19th century with the Christians.
Beautifully colored eggs, newly hatched chicks and bunnies were all considered gifts of abundance and new growth and it continues through to the present. But the most interesting part of the legend states that the bunny not only decorates and then hides the eggs, but lays the eggs as well. An egg laying bunny, who would have guessed!
Regardless of how the tradition arrived, the egg hunt is the main attraction for kids from 1 to 9 years of age. For the older kids and teens there is a sports beach, Kinetic Sand, a photo booth, tattoos, a DJ and dancing!
Eggstravaganza: By the Sea is Saturday, April 15 from 9:00 a.m. to noon and is for DC Ranch residents and their guests. Tickets are limited to 6 per family with admission $7 for kids 4 and older and adults are $15. The yummy Boardwalk Brunch is included in the cost.
If you get there and can’t find parking head to The Homestead Community Center and catch the shuttle. The first bus will leave at 8:45 a.m. to head to Desert Camp. On the return the last bus will depart at 12:30 p.m. to get you back to your car.
