If you live in or near the Scottsdale area and you enjoy cycling, it’s time to sign up for the 13th annual Tour de Scottsdale! This event takes place on Sunday, October 9th from 6:30 am to 12:00 pm, and it starts and ends on Market Street in DC Ranch. So if you want a great reason to ride your bike just minutes from home on a cool fall morning, it’s not too late to sign up for the Tour de Scottsdale. Below are the answers to some common questions about this local event.
What is the ride for?
The reason for this annual bike ride in Scottsdale is to benefit the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, which manages the beautiful McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Considering that DC Ranch residents live right next to this area and likely have a great view of it, this event is important to many of us.
How long is the bike ride?
There are a couple of courses to choose from. The longer course is 70 miles. It starts and begins on DC Ranch’s Market Street, but it goes as far east as McDowell Mountain Road near Rio Verde and Fountain Hills and as far west as Scottsdale Road. This course also goes north to Cave Creek Road and south to Shea Boulevard.
If you haven’t exactly been preparing to ride your bike for 70 miles, you can take the 30-mile course instead. It also starts and ends on Market Street, but it mostly stays to the northwest of the area. On this course, you’ll ride west to Scottsdale Road, north to Cave Creek Road, and south on Pima Road as you head back to Market Street.
How can you get involved?
If you want to ride your bike in the Tour de Scottsdale, you can register now. If you do it by September 29, the registration fee for the 30-mile course is $80, and it’s $135 for the 70-mile course. If you register after that, it’s $90 for the 30-mile course and $150 for the 70-mile course.
Once you register for the Tour de Scottsdale, you need to know where and when to pick up your event packet, t-shirt, and other necessities. You can head to the Homestead Community Center to do so on Friday, October 7 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, or on Saturday, October 8 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. You can also pick them up on the day of the Tour de Scottsdale on Market Street, starting at 5:00 am.
If you can’t ride your bike on October 9, you can still keep up with any friends or family members participating in the event by signing up for live athlete tracking. This way, you will get text messages and links through Facebook as any athletes you know ride in the Tour de Scottsdale.
