On Saturday, October 18, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy is hosting “Preserve Day,” a free event, in honor of Scottdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve Month. The celebration takes place at the Preserve’s newest trailhead, Brown’s Ranch Trailhead (on Alma School Road, 1.25 miles north of Dynamite) within minutes of DC Ranch.

Here’s the “Preserve Day” event schedule:
- 8:30 am – Guided Fitness Hike with Mike Nolan, Executive Director of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, a 4-mile hike on Brown’s main trail and the Upper Ranch Trail (approximately 2-hours)
- 9:00 am – 10:00 – Trailside naturalist station – activities for kids
- 9:00 – 11:00 am – Nature guides on Jane Rau Trail, said to be one of the most beautiful trails in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve
- 10:30 am – Ampitheater at Brown’s Ranch Trailhead – Scottsdale Historian Joan Fudela sharing history of the area: “The People’s Preserve”
- Pathfinders” (Conservancy volunteers) will be on-hand to answer questions from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm
The Brown’s Ranch Trailhead is the preserve’s access point for several well-known mountains in the area, including Granite, Cholla, Brown, Balanced Rock and Cathedral Rock. The trailhead includes exhibits about the human history near the Preserve.
Also unique from the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead is that you will see remnants of the buildings and pastures of Brown’s Ranch along the trail. The ranch operated from the 1800’s until the mid 1950’s.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is owned by the City of Scottsdale, and encompasses more than 30,000 acres in and around the McDowell Mountains. There are over 131 miles of trails for hikers, bikers and equestrian use.
