Patients undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix appreciate the relaxing environment Coonly Garden affords.
Coonley Garden at Mayo Clinic Hospital
The garden, filled with Ironwood, Boojum, Mesquite and Palo Verde trees, was dedicated to the Mayo Clinic by William and Genevieve Coonly in 2007.
At the garden’s entrance is one very special Ironwood tree, which was planted to commemorate the Mayo Clinic’s 20th anniversary in Arizona. The tree was a gift from the Mayo Clinic’s colleagues in Rochester, Minnesota.
Mrs. Coonly wanted the garden to be an inviting and relaxing space where “patients could take a serene break from the hospital”.
The garden’s winding walking path is decorated with a variety of Arizona’s beautiful plants like the organ pipe cactus, aloe and agave, yucca, the prickly pear cactus and giant cholla.
The garden has one unique feature, however, that really distinguishes it from other gardens in Arizona. The Coonly Garden has a beautiful, bronze statue of a holy woman gathering healing plants. The life-size sculpture of the “spiritual teacher” was inspired by Dr. Kathryn Hirschorn, M.D., a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic.
The sculpture was created by Arizona sculptor Pat Mathiesen. The artists describes the statue like this:
“She is connected to the earth, the sky and all creatures as one. The rocks at her feet are arranged in a sacred circle, representing the four directions, the universe, and eternity.”

Mr. and Mrs. Coonly, in another act of generosity, made a donation to extend the Nature Trail at the Mayo Clinic’s Scottsdale campus.
