If you’re selling a home in DC Ranch, your REALTOR® may have suggested that you hire a professional house-cleaner before you put your home on the market – that way, you just have to maintain what the expert did until your home sells.
But keeping your house spotless so it’s ready to show at a moment’s notice is tough. How are you supposed to keep up with everything?
This list of five tips can make your kitchen sparkle before a showing – and they’re all super-simple.
5 Tips to Make Your Kitchen Sparkle Before a Showing
Nobody wants to run around the house in a flurry of activity because there’s a buyer on the way, so follow these nine tips to keep your kitchen looking its best:
- Use frozen lemon slices in your garbage disposal
- Keep a basket of cleaning supplies on-hand
- Polish the sink with a tablespoon of flour
- Add a bowl of vinegar to your dishwasher
- Keep a spare laundry basket for things that need to leave with you
Here’s a closer look at each.

#1. Use Frozen Lemon Slices in Your Garbage Disposal
Freshen up the way your kitchen smells with lemon. Dice a few lemons and place one piece each in an ice cube tray. Cover the lemon cubes with water and freeze. When you get the notice that a prospective buyer is coming by, drop a few of the frozen lemon cubes down your garbage disposal and turn it on. The ice will clean your disposal while the lemons freshen it – and the whole kitchen will smell fresh and clean.
#2. Keep a Basket of Cleaning Supplies On-Hand
Tuck a small basket of essential cleaning supplies – antibacterial wipes, a dustcloth and polishing wipes – under your kitchen sink. You’ll have everything you need to do a quick run-down on-hand, even if you have short notice that a buyer is coming to see your home.

#3. Polish the Sink With a Tablespoon of Flour
Drop a tablespoon of flour into a clean, dry sink and scrub it around with a dry dishcloth. After you’ve covered all the steel in the sink, wet your dishcloth and rinse away the excess flour. Dry the surface thoroughly and it’ll shine like new.
#4. Add a Bowl of Vinegar to Your Dishwasher
Hard water stains are a common problem in the desert – and if you’re facing the issue, add a bowl of vinegar to your next load of dishes. The vinegar will take away some (or all) the lime that’s built up on your dishes and in the inside of your dishwasher. If the lime you’re dealing with is particularly tough, you may need to run a few loads with a bowl of vinegar to clear it all away.

#5. Keep a Spare Laundry Basket for Things That Need to Leave With You
Keep an empty laundry basket you can use to whisk away items you don’t have time to put away before a showing. You can toss in mail from the counter, books left out in the living room, and anything else that’s not already in its proper place – that way, you’ll save time and can focus on more important things when you have a short-notice showing (like getting the dog in the car or opening all the blinds to let in more natural light).
