If you’re thinking about selling your home this spring, your REALTOR® will talk to you about what you need to do to sell quickly (and at the right price). One of those things will be to thoroughly clean your home so you can stage it in a way that appeals to the widest possible range of buyers. Check out these five tips for spring cleaning your home so it sparkles – and so that it leaves buyers with a great impression.
5 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Home to Sell Fast
First things first: Spring clean your home room by room. You can check off each room from your To-Do list and feel a sense of accomplishment (and know that you’re partway done, which helps).
As you go through each room, use these five spring cleaning tips:
- Clear clutter first
- Tackle seasonal chores in each space
- Pay special attention to baseboards, backsplashes and molding
- Make your windows sparkle
- Clean out and organize your cabinets and pantry
Here’s a closer look at each (and how each will help you sell your home faster).
Spring Cleaning Tip #1: Clear Clutter First
Find a home for everything that’s cluttering each space in your house. Whether you have bills on the counter, clothing draped over a treadmill (hey, we’re not judging) or kids’ toys overflowing from baskets, bins and boxes, make sure that everything is in its own place. Because you plan to sell your home and move, now is a great time to see what you need and what you don’t; the more you get rid of now, the less you have to move later. You can set up a system in which you carry three boxes from room to room, labeled “Keep,” “Donate,” and “Trash” if it’s easier. As you finish each room, take your donations out to your car and stash them in the trunk; that way, they’re halfway out of your possession.
Spring Cleaning Tip #2: Tackle Seasonal Chores in Each Space
Seasonal chores like cleaning your refrigerator coils, changing air filters, scrubbing the grill on the patio and changing smoke detector batteries are all ideal tasks for tackling during your spring cleaning spree.
Spring Cleaning Tip #3: Pay Special Attention to Baseboards, Backsplashes and Molding
Prospective buyers won’t always notice all the things that you do to spring clean your home – but they’ll certainly notice all the things you don’t do. Pay close attention to baseboards in each room, backsplashes in the kitchen and molding in every room. You want to show buyers that your home is easy to maintain, and that means tackling often-forgotten spots that buyers may notice while they’re touring your home.
Spring Cleaning Tip #4: Make Your Windows Sparkle
Your windows need to be spotlessly clean – not just now, but the entire time your home is on the market. That’s because they’ll let in natural light, and if they’re streaked, spotted or dirty, buyers will certainly notice. (Most buyers spend at least a few minutes gazing out the windows as they tour homes, if only to check out the views, so you don’t want them to come away with the impression that your home is dirty.
Spring Cleaning Tip #5: Clean Out and Organize Your Cabinets and Pantry
Buyers can – and will – open up your cabinets and pantry to see how much space is available. The best thing you can do is take out everything you haven’t used in the past six months and pack it away to take out in your next home. While you’re there, organize like items and make sure everything is neat as a pin. You’re selling more than cupboard space here; you’re selling the idea that your home is easy to keep clean – even the cabinets.
