When you start your house-hunt, you’ll most likely have a wish list of all the features you want it to have. Because there are so many spectacular homes for sale in DC Ranch, you’ll probably find most – if not all – the items on your wish list.
Sometimes, though, buyers find homes that don’t check all the boxes – and then they compromise.
But there are four things you should never compromise on when you buy a home. Check out this list to find out what they are.
4 Things You Should Never Compromise On to Buy a Home
Based on our experience, there are a handful of things that are worth holding out for, including:
- A turnkey home (unless you want one that needs some TLC)
- The right school district
- Good neighbors
- A decent commute time to work
1. A Turnkey Home
When you’re looking at real estate listings, you’ll see some homes listed as “turnkey.” That simply means that they’re in great shape and ready for move-in – they don’t need any repairs or renovations, because they’re ready to go as-is.
Remember, though, that no house is perfect. Even new construction has a few issues here and there, so don’t have expectations that no home will ever be able to meet! However, if you find a home that needs more work than you’re willing to put in – such as when you love everything but the kitchen, and you’d have to redo it to be happy there – it’s worth holding out for a different home.
2. The Right School District
All the homes in DC Ranch are part of the Scottsdale Unified School District, and the schools students are assigned to include:
- Copper Ridge School (public, pre-K through 8th grade)
- Scottsdale Preparatory Academy (charter, grades 5 through 12)
- Chaparral High School (public, grades 9 through 12)
There are also several private schools in the area, including El Dorado (grades pre-K through 8th) and Notre Dame Preparatory High School (grades 9 through 12).

3. Good Neighbors
All of the homes in DC Ranch are part of an owners’ association, which means they’re all subject to the rules and regulations necessary to protect property values. You won’t have to worry about wild paint jobs on the homes near yours – but you do want to make sure that the area you’re looking in is a good fit for your lifestyle. Drive through the neighborhood at various times of day to check things like outdoor noise, how many children are out playing, and whether there are lots of pets outdoors.
4. A Decent Commute Time to Work
You’re most likely going to have to drive to work five days a week, so you need to make sure that the home you’re interested in buying isn’t a big stretch. Try driving from the neighborhood to work in the morning to see how the traffic situation looks, and leave work at your normal time to head to the neighborhood – that can be a real eye-opener in some cases.
