One of the best things about living in DC Ranch is all the resources we have access to as part of our community association. One of the newest amenities in the community is the DC Ranch community garden, as well as our new “garden coach”, Tyler Storey, a Master Gardener who guides gardeners and provides a series of workshops.
This month, Tyler’s article to residents revealed the simplicity of winter gardening in the desert and the 3 vegetable varieties that can be planted in November and December.
- Roots – carrots, beets, onions, radishes, rutabagas, turnips, etc.
- Greens – all lettuces, cabbages, spinach, kale, greens, endive, chard, etc.
- Stems – broccoli, cauliflower, celery, etc.
Basically, these types of vegetables will thrive in our climate in winter because we are eating the plant itself and not waiting for the flower of the plant to produce (e.g. tomatoes, beans, cucumbers start at the base of a flower). All you have to worry about with root, green and stem vegetables is that they are growing.
DC Ranch residents can lease garden plots through the DC Ranch Community Association.
We are your go-to resource for community information, events and DC Ranch homes for sale.
