You may find that there are items you unpack and pack away again every year, but that you never actually use. Once that’s done, use these three tips to store your holiday decor while your house is on the market:
- Invest in color-coded boxes
- Label and inventory every box
- Set aside dedicated holiday decor space

Holiday Decor Storage Tip #1: Invest in Color-Coded Boxes
Pick up colored plastic bins at your local home improvement store – and choose different colors for different holidays. (Because you’ve already gone through your holiday decor to figure out what you don’t use anymore, you should have a rough idea of how many bins you’ll need for each holiday.)
Choose bins that are all the same size to make packing and stacking easier. Remember, too, that it’s better to have more bins than you need than it is to have too few bins.

Holiday Decor Storage Tip #2: Label and Inventory Every Box
Pull out all your holiday decor again and place it all in the appropriate bins. As you pack, use a layering technique; you want the heaviest items on the bottom of each bin. Be careful not to make some bins a lot heavier than others are – try to spread out your items so that each bin is about equal in weight, which makes it easier when you’re ready to pull out all your decorations.
After a box is full, write a complete inventory of what’s inside and tape it to the lid. That way, you won’t have to rummage through boxes when you’re looking for something specific later.
Pro Tip: If your boxes aren’t all the way filled, that’s okay – but you should fill up the extra space with towels or packing paper. That way, the items inside will stay safer.
Holiday Decor Storage Tip #3: Set Aside Dedicated Holiday Decor Space
Don’t place your boxes willy-nilly in the attic or the garage. Set aside a dedicated space for all the bins from each holiday so you know exactly where to go when you need your items. Doing this also helps the movers keep your items together – when you get to your new home, you can have the crew put everything just where you want it.
