Holiday lights are going up all over the state – and some of the most notable light displays are right here in Scottsdale and in nearby areas. Check out these great places to see holiday lights this year:
- Lights of the World
- Illumination, Symphony of Light
- Scottsdazzle Holiday Extravaganza
Here’s a closer look at each so you can plan your holiday light tours.
Lights of the World
Lights of the World is a truly remarkable festival. With 75 stunning displays featuring more than 10 million lights, this Phoenix-based light show is at the Arizona State Fairgrounds (1826 West McDowell Road in Phoenix) and runs from November 22 to January 12.
As the largest holiday light show in North America, this massive event never disappoints. You’ll enjoy rides, live music and shows, and plenty of food, drink and crafts. The Puppetone Rockers are playing November 21 though December 15, and you can enjoy sea lion shows from December 19 to January 12.
This is the event’s third year in a row, and it features completely new (and improved) light displays. You’ll see mixes of traditional paper lanterns, bright LEDs and more. Each display showcases different cultures and civilizations from all over the world – and they go hand-in-hand with the exploration of global cuisine. They even have life-like dinosaurs this year, which is a new addition that kids love.
The festivities start Thursday through Sunday at 5 p.m. and stay open until 10 p.m., and the event is open December 24 through January 1, as well.
Illumination, Symphony of Light
Illumination, Symphony of Light is the world’s largest animated drive-through holiday light show, making it an experience like no other. You’ll discover a fabulous symphony of light and sound featuring more than 2 million LED lights, all animated and synchronized to classic holiday tunes. This fabulous, family-friendly event is in Tempe, at the Tempe Diablo Stadium (2200 West Alameda Drive) and in Glendale at the Westgate Entertainment District (6797 North 93rd Avenue).
Illumination, Symphony of Light is open throughout the week, and guests are welcome to enjoy hot chocolate, fresh kettle corn and almonds purchased at the entrance. Once inside, you simply tune your radio to the FM station the entrance workers give you.
You can buy tickets online or simply drive up and purchase them, though they cost more at the gate than they do online. You’re welcome to take as many photos as you’d like throughout the experience. The drive-through displays are open from November 20 through January 5.
Scottsdazzle Holiday Extravaganza
Scottsdazzle is back for its fourth year, and this year it’s bigger than ever. The entire month-long celebration is a delightful combination of lights and decor, festivals, concerts and so much more. The official tree lighting ceremony takes place on November 30 (in conjunction with a sing-along) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Scottsdale Waterfront’s Soleri Bridge. Then, you’ll see more than a million customized lights. The rest of Old Town lights up as well – and you can check the calendar of events here.
Scottsdazzle runs from November 30 through January 1.
